Arts Prefects 2020

Message from the Arts Prefects

In our role within the Arts portfolio, we strive to promote the artistic achievements that our students make, as well as advocate for the performing and visual arts in our school. We have already completed two house competitions in this field during Term 1 and more will be announced in the coming weeks.

There will be many opportunities for students to engage within the Arts throughout 2020, so watch this space. If you have any questions or initiatives you want to see, feel free to contact us.

Assemblies

In a first for our College, our portfolio gives us the authority to oversee our full school assemblies, with the desire to introduce fun and entertaining activities that promote and celebrate participation, with prizes up for grabs, all the while maintaining student achievement and important information, as part of the ICE formula (Information, Celebration and Entertainment). In doing so, we hope to ensure that our full school assemblies become an enticing part of your week, and not another dreary part of school life.

The next assembly will be a Flag Assembly, coordinated by the International Prefect Committee. This will be held on Wednesday October 14th @ 10.20.

Events

Throughout the course of the year, there will be extracurricular activities within the realm of the arts that you can sink your teeth into. Some of these will be initiated by staff and students at College; others will be announced as out of school projects that you can opt-in to. Follow any developments for any events involving the arts, from music, to drama, to dance, to all things creatively digital, right here.

Smokefree Rockquest

The prefect team would like to congratulate Age of Steel and Daybreak for participating in the Manawatu Regional Smokefree Rockquest. Daybreak, a combined band of Horowhenua and Waiopehu students came third overall, whilst Age of Steel guitarist Brooklyn Greig-Hartley won the APRA Lyric Award. House Competitions

Each prefect portfolio offers various competitions during the year, where students have the chance to win house points. For us, this is no different. We aim to hold at least one whole school house competition that incorporates an important aspect of both visual and performing arts within our school. We have already held an art competition, and we desire to have a house competition celebrating music, dance and drama before the end of the school year.

Year 13 Karaoke Competition

During the Year 13 Camp, students participated in the Karaoke Competition for the prized trophy and house points. In the house entries, Rata defeated Kowhai in a fun-filled affair. Adjacent is a video, which includes a snippet of each performance from the four houses, so you can judge for yourself who hit the right note.

Chalk Art Competition

On the 5th of March, the first Arts house event for the year took place in the centre of our quad. Students were able to win points for their house by either filling in an individual square, or by contributing to their house entry, which was professionally assessed by our three guest judges, all centred around the theme of ‘NUA Way Values’. After much scrutiny and many minutes of deliberation, Kowhai narrowly overcame Rata, despite the impressive visual display of both creations, with Ngaio in a distant third. We would like to thank the three judges, Mrs Gilroy, Ms Parkin and Mr Congdon, and all who participated or were there to give moral support.

Wearable Arts Competition

On Friday, September 25th, the Wearable Arts Competition was held in our school hall. The four houses battled against each other to devise the most creative design with the various materials provided, ranging from pipe cleaners, to tin foil, to newspaper. The theme for this year was 'Covid' and there were many different interpretations on show, including essential workers, testing staff and the virus itself. After a quick verdict, Ngaio emerged victorious, followed by Kowhai, then Rata, and finally Hinau. All houses excelled in fulfilling the judges criteria and were all highly praised for their creativity. We would like to thank Mrs McIntosh for judging our students vibrant works.

Initiatives

A diverse range of artistic and creative projects will keep our portfolio, and the arts in general, consistently relevant and fresh. This section allows us to publish breakthrough designs that students come up with, that foster originality and inspire creativity. We will also include initiatives that people from beyond our school undertake that encourage you to think artistically.

We have a number of projects awaiting approval from higher office. The objective of these are to take advantage of the unique facilities and architecture we currently possess, as well as spark further interest in our College from our wider local community and beyond. This requires student-led ideas and whole school participation and we always accommodate a unique view to this approach.

Time Capsule

The Arts Prefects are pleased to announce that preparations are now underway for the planting of a Time Capsule. In celebration of 80 years as an educational establishment and the oldest existing high school in the Horowhenua, this opportunity is unique in its celebration of our history, as a school, community and generation. Talks are ongoing surrounding the content of the capsule, as well as the location, so keep an eye out for any developments as they may occur.

Schoolwide Art Displays

Around the school, we have various artworks painted by numerous students down the years. Many of these include paintings that are over 15 years old. The Arts faculty has decided that these works should be refreshed, in order to keep up with continued art designs, styles and trends. Stay tuned on any new information regarding this here, as this will be consistently updated within the next few weeks.
